First Commercial OpenRPD Deployment

BEIJING, CHINA, 10 January 2018 – Pacific Broadband Networks (PBN), an Australian-founded HFC solution and product supplier, is proudly announcing our first commercial OpenRPD deployment. Together with Cisco’s cBR-8, DPIC line card, and Remote-PHY shelf device, the solution will serve more than 30,000 subscribers in its first phase deployment.

This marks the first phase of Anshan Cable’s (one of PBN’s long-term customers in China) multi-tiered approach to upgrade its existing HFC network, to a Distributed Access Architecture (DAA). The primary goal of this upgrade is to provide 1Gbps download services to end-users, and the infrastructure required to deliver 4K/8K UHDTV services. The CCAP architecture is the ideal strategic move where existing legacy QAM and IP based video services are to co-exist. In the next 3 years, Anshan Cable is planning to upgrade 500,000 subscribers to the DAA OpenRPD architecture.

The OpenRPD solution provides the flexibility, upgradability, and interoperability that MSOs are looking for. In addition to the existing N+0 architecture in Anshan Cable, the shelf-based RPD solution provides the MSO the advantage of not modifying their outside plant, resulting in significant reductions in CAPEX, while providing network capacity for years to come. The solution will also incorporate PBN’s network management software package enabling a truly intelligent network.

PBN has been an active contributor in the CableLabs OpenRPD eco-system, and has been involved with the trial of its products with multiple MSOs in Australia, Asia, China, and Europe. Anshan Cable is the first commercial OpenRPD deployment for PBN.

“We have been working with PBN since the 90s and have always enjoyed the high-quality products and outstanding services. On top of that, PBN has been a trustworthy partner in discussing network architectures and future technology developments. Working with PBN and Cisco in the DAA/CCAP arena provides us tremendous insights from the industry and their international deployment experiences. The flexible Remote-PHY architecture paves a smooth migration path for us to upgrade to 10Gbps in the future. Our DAA deployment experiences will be the gold model for other MSOs in the province/country.” Hongyu Wang, Anshan Cable, VP of Engineering

“PBN is very excited to support Anshan Cable for its first-step migration to the next generation HFC/DFC network. PBN always has an emphasis on the standards and openness of the solutions, hence OpenRPD is a great combination of both to our valued customers. PBN will continue providing advanced hardware and software packages and professional services to MSOs in China and assisting them for a smooth transition to DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1.” Patrick Ning, PBN, General Manager – China
